Canoeing

Canoeing in river Alva – 2 sectors (October to May)

Alva 1 – Vila Cova do Alva / Côja

This is a 5.60 miles long sector, with more than a dozen dams of different shapes (slop, step, vertical, round, semi-destroyed, etc). The trip doesn’t involve many technical sectors but some skills, a good physical condition and previous experience in kayaking are required to have the most out of the activity.

Meeting point: at 9.30 a.m. – at the Old Bridge in Côja (municipally of Arganil).
Duration: it depends on the river flow.

Alva 2 – Côja / Secarias

This 5.60 miles long sector is the most accessible sector of the river with two different sections: the first one develops a 6.60 ft weir and a succession of small rapids before stopping for lunch. The final part of the trip involves some adventure because it’s always difficult to cross an existing weir broken in two safely. After this moment of sheer adrenaline the effect of the mini-hydro of  Secarias comes into play, and the river becomes a beautiful, peaceful water mirror until the end of the trip. Although  this activity can be done as an initiation to canoeing, we recommend some previous canoeing experience, especially if there’s strong flow

Meeting Point: at 9.30 a.m. – at the Old Bridge in Côja (municipally of Arganil).
Duration: it depends on the flow of the river.
Price: 20€/pax. Includes equipment,  insurance, briefing and accompaniment by accredited guides and transportation of drivers between the beginning and the end of the trip. Extra 5 euros will be charged for renting a wetsuit (wetsuit boots are included).

Additional Information

The areas that demand more techniques can be safely crossed, but require increased attention and concentration. At the end of the course you will feel: “Wow, that was amazing!”. This activity requires previous experience in canoeing and it is advisable have a good physical condition since the trip os long and hard. The participation of children and young people under 16 years will not be admitted.

Meting point: at 9.30 a.m. At the medieval bridge of Alvoco das Várzeas or in Vide (it depends of the river section selected).
Duration: about 5/6 hours.
Price: 27,5€/pax. Equipment, insurance, accredited guides, drivers transportation between the beginning and the end of the trip. Wetsuit, helmet and wetsuit boots are included.

Additional information

Canoeing in River Ceira – Góis/Lousã (November to April)

Canoeing in the River Ceira in the region of Góis. We will select the sector of the river depending on the flow of the rivervolume and the level of experience in canoeing of the participants.
Sector 1 – Colmeal/Cabreira
Sector 2 – Góis/VNCeira
Sector 3 – VNCeira/Serpins.

If river flow is too low this activity won’t be realized. Canoeing in any of these sectors requires previous experience in kayaking/canoeing, spirit of adventure and some physical dexterity because although the degree of difficulty varies greatly according to the section and the volume of water, the river Ceira becomes very narrow in some places, with large stones and trees that sometimes block the river and create situations of some difficulty. There are also several weirs with different configurations, which make this canoeing activity one of the most attractive in central region f Portugal. It can be performed in a tandem canoe, but advanced canoeists should experience it in kayaks.

Meeting Point: at 9.00 a.m. Next to the Headquarters of the Volunteer Fire Department in Góis City.
Duration: it depends on the river flow.
Price: 30€/pax. Equipment,  insurance, accredited guides, driver’s transportation between the beginning and the end. Wetsuit, helmet and wetsuit boots are included.
