Bread and Cheese Workshop

In Aigra Nova, a Schist Village located in the middle of Serra da Lousã, participants will have the opportunity to experience the process of manufacturing the typical corn and rye bread -Broa- and goat cheese. Rye and corn are the major cereals produced for centuries. The cheese is made with the milk provided by the goat herds of the village. This program includes a guided tour to the headquarters of the Schist Traditions Ecomuseum, where all the traditional activities of these agricultural and pastoral communities are portrayed.

 Dry Chestnut and “Magusto” Workshop

The chestnut is considered an endogenous and unique product. In Aigra Nova there are the ”Caniços” – a typical wooden structure used to dry chestnut. The program is divided in two parts. At the morning, participants will visit some centenarian Chestnut Tree groves, and a typical ”Caniço”.
At the afternoon, participants can enjoy the Magusto, taste the chestnuts and be part of some ethnographic entertainment. At the end, will be offered a sample of heather honey and dried chestnut. The products prepared will be part of a snack or lunch (optional*).

Price per participant: 15€. Minimum: 8 pparticipants. Ask for the special prices for groups. Duration: about 3hour.
Entertainment options: a) group of concertinas (melodeon) – 150€; or b) Ethnographic group – 200€

Sweet Heather Workshop (honey and honey liquer)

 Visit to a traditional apiary located in the Schist Village of Aigra Nova, where participants will be part of the entire process of collecting, transporting and pressing the honey. It will be held a ”How to make Honey Liqueur” workshop, which includes a tasting of honey liqueur and ”filhós” with honey. (Filhós – traditional dessert from Portugal).This program has the support of the inhabitants of Aigra Nova. The products prepared will be part of a snack or lunch (optional*).

 Corn Workshop – “Descamisada” and Hugging

It was a tradition, through these mountain villages to make the ”descamisada”, the process of taking off the small leaves of the corn. This day was always a time to celebrate. The population from the several surrounding villages gathered up and, all together, made the entire process of collecting the corn, taking off its small leaves – descamisada- and taking off the corn grains from the tang, the -debulha-. Finally, they would, also, take the corn grains to the threshing floor to dry. The program includes harvesting the corn, transporting it to the threshing floor of the village, the ”descamisada” and the ”hugging”,a typical tradition which occurs if, in the middle of the golden corncobs, a red one appears. In this case, the person who found it has to hug all the other participants. It is also included the ”debulha” and the process of spreading the corn through the threshing floor. Through the entire workshop, there will ethnographic entertainment and the typical -desgarrada-.
