Canyoning

Ribeira da Pena (Góis) – all year

This activity consists of walking down Ribeira da Pena through jumps, abseiling and crossings in water. The stream runs through an abrupt valley, whose riverbed, banks and slopes are formed by impressive cliffs, making this location almost inaccessible. For this reason, the valley also serves as a refuge for plants and animals unique and rare. Being one of the most spectacular streams in the Portuguese central region, it combines wild and inhospitable landscape (formed by numerous waterfalls, lagoons and towering cliffs) with lush vegetation and peculiar wildlife, making it worth the effort expended in performing this demanding activity.

Meeting Point: at 9:30 a.m. at Village of  Esporão in the municipality of Góis
Duration: 5 hours.
Price: 35€/pax. Individual gear(wetsuit, helmet, etc), insurance and briefing by accredited guides.

Low Cost Canyoning  - Ribeira da Pena (Góis) –June to September

This activity consist of hiking down Ribeira da Pena by means of jumping into water, abseiling and crossing water. This stream runs through an abrupt valley, whose riverbed, banks and slopes are formed by impressive cliffs, making this place almost inaccessible. For this reason, this valley also serves as a refuge for plants and animals unique and rare. Being one of the most spectacular streams of the Portuguese Central Region, it combines a wild and inhospitable landscape (formed by numerous waterfalls, lagoons and towering cliffs) with lush vegetation and peculiar wildlife, making it worth the effort expended in performing this demanding activity. Low Cost canyoning does not include abseiling. It only takes place during the months of June to September, depending on the river flow.

Meeting point: at 9.30 am in Village of Esporão (in the municipality of Góis).
Duration: 4 hours. Price: 25 € / pax. Includes personal gear (wetsuit, helmet, harness, etc..), insurance and supervision by accredited guides. Minimum: 6. Maximum: 20 participants

Ribeira das Quelhas (Castanheira de Pêra) - Spring and Autumn

The route consists of descending the Ribeira das Quelhas by means of jumping, abseiling and crossing water. Ribeira das Quelhas is a basic stream, with a short stretch,  suitable for introduction to this activity. There are 6 interesting 14-20 metres high rappels. It also offers some small jumps into the water and, in some places, it is necessary to do some rock down climbing. It is recommended previous experience in this kind of activity or, at least, in abseiling.

Duration: 5hours. Meeting Point: at 9:30 a.m. in the village of Coentral (in the municipality of Castanheira de Pêra). Price: 40 € / pax. Includes personal gear (wetsuit, helmet, harness, e.g.), insurance and supervision by accredited guides. Minimum: 6 participants. Maximum: 20 participants

River Lordelo (Sever do Vouga) – April to October

Soon after the beginning of the activity, participants will meet their first jump of about 4 meters, some steps ahead a delicate descent and, then some small jumps, until we get to the first rappel of about 15 metres (alternatively participants can do guided rappel). The rest of the track progresses from rock to rock in and out of water, with some more jumps and an abseiling of about 25 metres. Finally, participants will get to a large pit which offers the possibility of several jumps and a small toboggan.

Meeting point: at 9.30 am – in the village of Couto Esteves (at restaurant “Junior”, next to the cemetery). Duration: 4hours. Price: 45 € / pax. Includes personal gear (wetsuit, helmet, harness, etc.), insurance and supervision by accredited guides. Minimum: 6. Maximum: 20 participants

River TeixeiraFreita Mountain (April to October)

 Soon after entering the river, participants will face a 25 metres abseiling, with multiple and relatively slippery platforms, ending in a large natural pool. After 15 minutes walk along the riverbed, with large blocks and some natural pools, the second obstacle arises, becoming necessary to do a 35 meters abseiling. Part of the waterfall is ramped and quite slippery. For those who have not yet  mastered abseiling techniques, a guided abseiling can be offered. The remainder of the trip is made across the riverbed to a broad and deep pool which offers a 4 meters long jump. There is the possibility of experiencing toboggan or jumps from different heights.

River Frades – Arada Mountain (Arouca)

The canyoning of Arada mountain is located in the municipality of Arouca, near the old wolfram mines in River Frades. The landscape is characterized by schist slopes that give it an enchanting crudeness. It is quite a steep river for it is born at an altitude of 1097 meters and flows into the Paivô River at 240 meters of altitude. Although it is born in a granite area, both routes of this canyoning are done across areas of schist.

 

Hydrology: This river is a tributary of Paivô river and the quality of its water is excellent. Water temperature is approximately 14-20 ° C, depending on time of year and of day.

Length: 2 km. Duration: about 3 hours. Difficulty: medium. Recommended period: April to October, depending on weather conditions. Meeting point: at 10 a.m. near the building of the municipality of Arouca. Price: € 50 per person. Personal gear included: complete wetsuit, helmet, harness, descender, insurance and supervision by accredited guides. There is the possibility of special prices for groups. Minimum: 6. Maximum: 20 participants.
